At MaineStage Shakespeare, we breathe new life into the classics! Join us this summer in Lafayette Park for performances of professional, innovative Shakespeare in the heart of downtown Kennebunk. Grab a blanket, bring a picnic, throw away your preconceptions and bring the whole family every Thursday through Sunday from July 1 to August 13.

This summer, MaineStage presents Shakespeare's hilarious first play, The Comedy of Errors, his most famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet, and a family friendly production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. All performances are fun and exciting for Shakespeare experts and beginners alike.

The Comedy of Errors

When Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio arrive in the port town of Ephesus, they are baffled to discover that everyone there seems to find them completely familiar! Unbeknownst to them, Ephesus is home to their long-lost twins, also named Antipholus and Dromio. Toss in a jealous wife, some misplaced money, and a bumbling exorcist, and you've got a recipe for disaster. Two sets of twins add up to double trouble in this hilarious comedy of mistaken identity. Approximate Running Time: 2 hours.

Romeo and Juliet

This summer, MaineStage Shakespeare brings the world's most iconic love story to vivid life. In a city torn apart by violence, love blossoms in the unlikeliest of places – between the son and daughter of two rival families, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Married in secret by a sympathetic friar, the star-crossed lovers attempt to defy their feuding families, Juliet's betrothal to another, and fate itself. You may know the story, but you've never seen it like this before. (Recommended for ages 7+) Approximate Running Time: 2 hours.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Helena loves Demetrius who loves Hermia who loves Lysander – sound complicated? Things only get more confusing when the four lovers flee to the forest realm of the squabbling fairy king and queen. This family matinee features fun, fairies, and our ShakeSTAR campers in supporting roles.

While our littlest audience members with the shortest attention spans are especially welcome at this production, all ages will enjoy A Midsummer Night's Dream. Approximate Running Time: 75 minutes
