The Animal Welfare Society is located on Holland Road in West Kennebunk, Maine. It is a private, non-profit humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 21 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 persons.
Our mission statement reads: "The Animal Welfare Society, a non-profit organization, exists to provide humane shelter and care to companion animals temporarily in need of housing, to assist in disaster response, and to further the cause of responsible animal adoption and ownership through education and public awareness. The society actively promotes kindness, the elimination of cruelty and neglect to all animals, and the lifelong commitment of people to their pets."
We accomplish these goals through the generosity of concerned citizens who contribute to our non-profit society through donations, pledges, membership and bequests. These funds go directly to the care of the animals and the many other programs we offer to the people and animals of our communities. Current programs include volunteering, humane education, dog obedience, low-cost spay/neuter assistance, fostering for pets of victims of domestic violence and more. Please visit us online at www.animalwelfaresociety.org or give us a call at 985-3244 for more information.
